NFL week continues here following one of the greatest Super Bowls in the 42 year history of the championship game. The New York Giants won perhaps the greatest upset since the 1969 season when the Jets beat the Colts. And the Giants were helped by their place kicker Lawrence Tynes of Scotland who kicked a field goal and two extra points to help his team win 17 to 14.
Tynes played high school and college football in Florida and college ball in Michigan. But he returned to his homeland of Scotland to play for NFL Europe's Scottish Claymores. He then moved to Ottawa and played for the CFL's Renegades. From 2004 to 2006 he played for the Kansas City Chiefs before moving to the Giants. Congratulations Lawrence.
Jean-Philippe Darche is a French-Canadian linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. Unlike other foreign players in the NFL, Darche went to school and started his playing career outside the US. He started playing hockey in his youth (not surprising since he's Canadian and the brother of an NHL player), but switched to football in high school in Montreal. He went on to play at McGill University in his hometown and then made it to the pros where he played in the CFL for the Toronto Argonauts. He made the jump to the NFL to play for the Seattle Seahawks and remained there for seven seasons before ending up with the Chiefs. Aside from being a linebacker for the defense, he also specializes in snapping the ball for the offense on punts.
The all-time leading scorer in NFL history is an active player for the Atlanta Falcons who is also the oldest active player in the NFL. 47 year old Danish-born Morten Andersen is old enough to be a grandfather and more than twice as old as many of his teammates. But he's still a remarkable kicker (he made 90% of his field goal attempts this past season) and has now played more games - by far - than any player in NFL history. The fact that he's been kicking in the NFL for more than a quarter century and is still on top of the game certainly gives some inspiration to those of us in our 40s. As long as there are NFL players still older than us, we're not really that old, are we?
In the third of our Oscars series, we honor Marco Beltrami, a composer nominated for best score for the film 3:10 to Yuma. Beltrani, an Italian native, has written scores for a number of action and horror movies. 3:10 to Yuma is a remake of a film based on an Elmore Leonard novel. This is Beltrami's first nomination. Today's immigrant of the day does not have a long career. In fact, she's just twelve years old. But Bangladeshi immigrant Farah Taslima has certainly made an important contribution to the country. One of her pieces was performed by members of the New York Philharmonic during their historic musical diplomacy tour of North Korea last month.
