Immigrants Of The Week: Tommy Haas, Stan Brock, and Mike Nicholsby Greg SiskindIMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: TOMMY HAAS - TENNIS PLAYER Congratulations to German-born tennis player Tommy Haas who recently became a US citizen. Haas is the former #2 tennis player in the world. He reached that pinnacle in 2002, but recently began a major resurgence as evidenced by his reaching the semi-finals in last year's Wimbledon. Haas also won an Olympic silver medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sidney.
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: STAN BROCK - HEALTH CARE HERO
British-born Stan Brock is the founder of Remote Area Medical (RAM), a non-profit health care company that has helped organize volunteer physicians, eye doctors, dentists and support staff to set up weekend-long events in large venues that offer vital health care services to the poor and uninsured. RAM has hosted 581 events and treated more than 500,000 people with the volunteer services of 45,000 health care professionals. According to Business TN Magazine:
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: MIKE NICHOLS - DIRECTOR
He's always been a favorite of mine from his days as half of a comic duo with Elaine May. He has best become known as a director and has a long list of great films that includes The Birdcage, Postcards from the Edge, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, Catch-22, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood, Working Girl, Angels in America and Charlie Wilson's War. He's also directed a number of well-regarded Broadway productions including Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple and Spamalot. Nichols has won a truly impressive number of honors over the years including - seven Tony Awards - a Grammy - an Academy Award - a Kennedy Center Honor - four Emmy Awards Most recently, he received the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award. By the way, winning the "Grand Slam" of an Oscar, Tony, Grammy and Emmy is extremely rare. Nichols is only one of ten artists in history who have won all four. And his 14 awards ranks as the most of any of the ten.
