A & F was fined one of the largest amounts ever against an employer in the state of Michigan as a result of problems discovered with the company's I-9 forms. The well known apparel retailer operates 26 stores in Michigan under the Abercrombie & Fitch as well as the Hollister labels. Apparently, something was not working properly with the company's I-9 software product, though the specifics were not spelled out by ICE in its press release and A & F hasn't been talking to the media.
This seems to be an extremely harsh punishment especially since the company is only accused of paperwork violations and not actually hiring illegally present workers. Also, the fact that the firm was using electronic I-9 software is really a shock since these products generally help companies avoid fines and not cause them.
