The National Immigrant Justice Center, Detention Watch Network, and Midwest Coalition for Human Rights have put together a report card grading the Obama administration's year-one progress on proposed immigration detention reforms.
In sum, detention reform has been undermined by ICE's over-reliance on penal incarceration practices and by local ICE field office resistance of reform policies. The report determined that detained immigrants are frequently mistreatment by detention officers, immigrants have limited access to counsel, and in many facilities there is insufficient medical care available. There is also a practice of misuse of solitary confinement, and there are reports of other degrading treatment in the facilities.
Not good enough Mr. President. Not even close.
