< Go back to Immigration Daily Senate Needs to Protect American Workers FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 2, 2000 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Lamar Smith released the following statement in response to reports that the Senate is likely to soon pass an H-1B bill. "I am disappointed that the Senate would increase the number of foreign high tech workers without including any safeguards for American workers:" "A company should not hire a foreign worker after laying off an American worker to do the same job. A company should make a good faith effort to recruit a U.S. worker before hiring a foreign worker. And, it should pay a foreign worker at least the salary that American students fresh out of college are making. Foreign workers should not undercut American wages." "Progress on the H-1B bill in the House remains dependent upon de-linking the bill from an amnesty for illegal aliens."
