Dear Editor:
I will never cease to be amazed at the number (few though they may be) of
people who believe that laws are to be selectively observed when
convenient.
Life is about choices. Choosing to risk one's life to break the law and
cross a border is a choice some people make. Unfortunately, some are on
the
losing side of that choice. A border is an important thing worth
protecting
and fighting to protect. Sometimes borders are arbitrary and sometimes
they
are enforced by might despite claims to the contrary. If we want to be a
country under the rule of law rather than anarchy, then we need to protect
our borders. Respect for the laws have to start with entry into this
country.
Here is a hypothetical viewpoint from an illegal alien: My land has
resources, but my neighbor's land has bigger/better resources. My land
cannot support me sufficiently (in my opinon). I would like a better life,
so I am "invading" my neighbor's land, growing my crops on his land, taking
his water and timber and generally improving my situation at his expense.
Since he has lots of land and resources, it doesn't matter...and he
shouldn't care. Some of us do care.
