Dear Editor:
In your recent editorial comments, you say: "If President Bush loses, Citizen Bush will likely look back at his term and judge that immigration reform was the only big issue where he missed the boat." I am dumbfounded by this statement. The "only issue where he missed the boat"? The fact that President Bush could lose is testament enough that he has missed quite a few boats - he inherited a budget surplus and squandered it; his first nine months in office were marked mostly by a very slow start (except paying back large campaign contributors with a tax cut); his response to the September 11 attacks has resulted in an unfinished war in Afghanistan, an unwarranted war in Iraq, thousands of casualties for reasons which remain unclear and shifting, and attempts to restrict civil rights for citizens and noncitizens alike. If Citizen Bush does come to this conclusion, he not only deserved to lose the election, he deserved to be taken from office much sooner than the end of 2004.
