Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl has evolved over the years into one of the most anticipated sporting and media events in the US. Throughout the country people gather for Super Bowl parties, which for many Americans has become an annual celebration similar to a holiday. More than 130 million people tune in on Super Bowl Sunday not only to watch the game but also to watch the new commercials. Advertisers pay a minimum of $2 million to air a 30-second television commercial during the Super Bowl.

American football is a game which has evolved from rugby and soccer. Two opposing teams are assigned to defend their territory against the other team and the purpose is to score a touchdown by advancing with the ball through the opponent's territory. The team with the most points by the time the clock runs out wins the game. A professioanl football game is divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each, with a halftime intermission between the second and third quarters.

The Super Bowl takes place on the last Sunday in January after a two-week preparation period following the conference championship games. This year's Super Bowl XXXV between the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens will be held on Sunday, January 28, at 6 p.m. Eastern time, in Tampa, Florida. If you're invited to a Super Bowl party go and enjoy even if you do not know the rules. It's not about the game.
