Congress, Not Agency, Is Largely To Blame For Failure In Immigration System
David Martin, INS General Counsel from 1995 to 1998 writes in Law.com that: "The Immigration and Nationality Act turns 50 this June. It has become encrusted with a host of complex provisions that took shape largely because of petty congressional maneuvering. They serve their intended beneficiaries badly and impede sensible management ... the INS resides on the fault line of America's deep ambivalence about immigration ... our legislators will find in their mirrors a significant source of the problems at the INS."

AILA Testifies To Senate Judiciary Committee On INS Reorganization
Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on behalf of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Stephen Yale Loehr testified "INS restructuring is not a dry exercise involving reform of a government bureaucracy. Decisions in this area will impact directly on our national security, as well as the lives of hundreds of thousands of American citizens, businesses, and legal immigrants who daily interact with this system. Making the wrong decisions can weaken our security through less effective and unfair enforcement, and result in unconscionable delays in citizenship processing, reuniting families, and helping American business to acquire the workers they need."

Dear Editor:
Mr. Latour's scathing article about the AFL-CIO's support of illegal immigrant workers is more than a little hypocritical. Or are immigration
lawyers practicing immigration law purely out of the goodness of their hearts? And how many immigration lawyers don't owe their very practices to
the continued existence of high levels of immigration and complex immigration laws? And lobby for the same? People who live in glass houses
shouldn't throw stones.

Dear Editor:
My family are frustrated with immigration system. We have filed petitions for my Aunt's young children from Thailand and have waited 2 years now with no
response. I have tried to fax information and status requests, called and mailed in inquiries and yet never receive any kind of response. We gone to the INS
office itself waited from 7 am and did not get to speak to anyone until 2 pm and was turned away saying no information was available and to write or call
the info line. The office I am referring to is the INS in Dallas. The children are nearing legal age which may make it even more difficult and we can't get any
information on their petitions. What can we do?
Frustrated and angry,
Stacie
