A Note from the Editors:
President Bush appointments to the newly formed Department of Homeland Security. Michael J. Garcia, currently the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement at the Department of Commerce, is to be the INS Acting Commissioner at the Department of Justice following INS Commissioner Ziglar's upcoming departure and Asa Hutchinson has been nominated by President Bush as Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security.
What does this mean for immigrants? It means conjuntion of immigration policy with terrorism policy, resulting in stricter enforcement.
What does this mean for immigration attorneys? Two things. First, business for immigration attorneys will likely increase as clients scramble to retain counsel in the wake of increased enforcement. Second, the implementation of harsh immigration laws will likely lead to a backlash resulting in more liberal immigration laws in the future.

Immigrant Life
American Thanksgiving Day
The origins of Thanksgiving probably lie in the Harvest festival celebrated in Western Europe. It was first celebrated by the English Piligrams along with their Native American neighbors in Plymouth, Massachussetts. It was also the custom of Puritan settlers to
designate a day of thanksgiving for God's blessing after a misfortune has passed. American Colonial government took up this custom as well, which quickly spread from New England to rest of America. For many years there was no national Thanksgiving holiday. In 1863, during the Civil War, President Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday in November.
Modern Thanksgiving is a celebration of family and home. The evening is spent with near and dear ones participating in a feast traditionally comprising of turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry relish, bread stuffing and pumpkin pie. Rest of the evening is spent
watching football game on TV. The day after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, when stores have special promotions for shoppers beginning their Christmas gift shopping.
We wish our readers a very happy Thanksgiving.
