AGJOBS Showdown
The AGJOBS drama centers on a conflict between the White House and Sen. Craig (R-ID) and his supporters. Despite 63 co-sponsors (enough to break a filibuster), there has been no Senate vote. As reported by the press, the White House instructed Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) to block AGJOBS from consideration. The White House wants to shelve all immigration reform legislation because it fears that any discussion on immigration reform will alienate some right-wing Republicans whose support it will need on November 2nd to get out the vote. Sen. Craig is an unlikely foe since he agrees with President Bush on most issues. However, his decision to oppose the White House on AGJOBS is likely influenced by the agricultural lobby who have worked to get relief legislation enacted for years. At the end of the day, AGJOBS supporters want a statute not just a Senate vote. To get the statute, they will need a vote in the House which in turn means that they will need the support of the House Republican leadership which may not be forthcoming if there is a danger to the President's re-election.
The fact is that President Bush's historic immigration speech in January has finally put major immigration reform on the Congressional agenda. Piecemeal measures such as AGJOBS and DREAM might actually delay, if not derail, legalization and related momentous immigration law changes next year, regardless of who wins the November elections. Business as usual within the Beltway is what has led the nation to its current immigration crisis. We need sweeping change, like SOLVE, not piecemeal legislation.

Dear Editor:
I agree with the suggestion that Bachelor graduates from US schools should automatically get a green card but if this is too radical at least persons with a PHD should get an automatic green card, what else should they have to prove? Why make it so tough for the best and brightest? Congress authorized 100 a year and we never come close.

Dear Editor:
Buchanan and Nader are two of the brightest presidential candidates ever to run. Fortunately, or unfortunately) they are both men who cannot be bought. Which tells you just exactly what is wrong with our election system. Presidential races should never be bought and paid for.

Dear Editor:
I was flabbergasted when I read the comment from Mary Ann V. M. Lopez, "proud to be a (legal) USC", and I would like to share a little story, I always taught
my 10 year old son to tell the truth and to never lie, I taught him that bad
people go to jail, then when he came to visit me while Immigration arrested
me I did not know what to say to him, There is a little disabled girl who may die because she is not receiving the medical care she deserves as an American Citizen, both of my kids are in a foreign country facing the reality of my mistakes. If you
do not think waking up every morning and facing my reality is not a
consequence I do not know what is, I'd rather be in jail in the USA knowing
that my little daughter receives medical care, I will even sign up for
capital punishment if my kids and their mom could go back, but my crime was
to work for over 13 years without permission to do so. How do I explain
that to my US Citizen son? And by the way I am not a cook or a janitor or driver. I finished my MBA as Magna Cum Laude. Now you maybe wonder how many years and no work permit, well there is a lot of people whom acquired their
permits by lying I could not lie again; I do agree with Mrs. Mary Ann V.
Lopez May the Lord bless America and its people always; I am only receiving what I deserve, that is life.
