                              THE WHITE HOUSE

                       Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release Contact: James E. Kennedy
Tuesday, October 3, 2000 (202) 456-7035

                      STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

Today, the Senate took an important step forward by providing temporary relief to high
technology companies that are experiencing a shortage of skilled workers and increasing
training opportunities for U.S. workers to meet those needs. While I commend the Senate
for its action, additional steps will have to be taken in the House to ensure that the
legislation provides adequate funding for job training and education.

I am disappointed that the Senate bill does not include the Latino Immigration Fairness
Act. The Act would ensure fairness for immigrants now living and working in the U.S.,
and I call on Congress to pass it before adjournment.

                                    ###
