                       STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

                 ON THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT (VAWA)

     Thanks to a strong, bipartisan vote in the United States Senate today, Congress has completed action to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, so that we will be able to continue working on behalf of women, children and families throughout the country.

     Over the past six years, the Violence Against Women Act has put more than $1.6 billion into the hands of law enforcers, victim advocates and those who run intervention and prevention programs to help protect women and children from acts of violence.

     With thousands of women becoming the victims of beatings and other violent crimes every day, reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act is of paramount importance to all those involved in the fight to reduce crime in our communities.
