< Back to current issue of Immigration Daily < Back to current issue of Immigrant's Weekly Dear Editor INS public affairs fact sheet of 7 November crows success of hiring 1700 new border agents out of 91,366 applicants by recruiting locally where the action is. (sic) One wonders from these statistics what is the guarded criteria of hiring the chosen 1700 against the unchosen 91k. I believe INS is still recruiting under narrow, favored and biased policies despite the glowing report of the fact sheet which seems to suggest INS recruiting has become refined and professional. Being a border agent under antiquated immigration laws and top heavy adminstration procedures is hardly a career move. There needs to be continual intensive recuiting program, but new agents need to be the "new look" of INS, rather than the "cannon fodder" of the mismanaged, over-bearing draconian INS image that exists at border entry points. Time will tell whether INS has their act together by watching how long the chosen 1700 stay at their posts under prevailing conditions.
