Hartford, Connecticut - Michael Wolcott Straus will be sworn in today as an Immigration Judge during an investiture ceremony at 3:00 p.m., in the Connecticut Supreme Court, 231 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. Chief Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy, from the Executive Office for Immigration Review in Falls Church, Virginia, will administer the oath of office. Judge Straus joins the ranks of some 200 Immigration Judges located in 52 Immigration Courts throughout the Nation. They are responsible for conducting formal administrative proceedings to determine whether foreign-born individuals who are charged with violations of Federal immigration law should be removed from the United States or may be granted relief from removal. Immigration Judges decide each case independently and their decisions are final unless appealed or certified to the Board of Immigration Appeals. In the past year, Immigration Judges completed more that 250,000 such proceedings. They are also authorized to administer oaths of citizenship to candidates for naturalization. Judge Straus was appointed Immigration Judge in August 2000. Prior to this appointment, he served as Counsel to the Chief Immigration Judge from March 1997 to August 2000. He received his undergraduate degree in 1982 from Carleton College, and his J.D. in 1985 from Washington University School of Law. From 1993 to March 1997, Judge Straus worked as the Senior Adjudications Officer and Acting Branch Chief for the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in Washington, D.C. He also worked in the private sector as an attorney for Barst & Shusterman from 1988 to 1993. Judge Straus served as an attorney for the INS in Los Angeles, California, from 1985 to 1988. He is a member of the California Bar.
