Dear Editor:
There is an urgent need around the country for pro
bono
legal assistance for Muslims, who have been arrested following
9/11/01.
Thousands of men have been arrested and hundreds deported, often for
very minor (if any) immigration status infractions. Many of these men
are the main means of support for their family and most of them have
no
criminal record or charges against them. Family after family has been
split up and many families have lost their homes.
Church World Service/Immigration and Refugee Program's Washington office is working with some of the key
Muslim organizations and is seeking pro bono legal assistance for
some
of these men. In addition to help being needed on a case by case
basis
in many locations, there is also a need for a full time, volunteer
attorney in the New York City area. If you are interested in helping
provide pro bono assistance, please send
your contact information to Bethany L. Olson at motes_hazel@hotmail.com.
Bethany is in the Church World Service/Immigration and Refugee Program's DC office and will gather the information and
make arrangements for contacts with the organizations, which have been
contacted by families who have had family members arrested and
detained.
