DOJ Proposes New Refugee Records System
The Department of Justice has issued a notice proposing
to establish a new system of records called The Refugee Access
Verification Unit Records (RAVU) to be maintained by the INS.
DOS Seeks Grant Proposals On Educational Assistance Award
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State asks for detailed proposals from US higher education institutions, which have an acknowledged reputation in the fields of education administration and English-as-a-Foreign Language. Programs
must comply with J-1 visa regulations.
Armenians Do Not Need To Register
The INS issued an updated notice on December 18, 2002 regarding the registration of certain nonimmigrant
aliens from designated countries, replacing the previous notice which incorrectly listed Armenia as a designated country.
INS Seeks Comments
The INS sought comments and provided a 30-day period for information collection on the following: Petition for
nonimmigrant filing fee exemption, Form I-129W; Arrival
Departure Record (Transit Without Visa), Form I–94T; Application for suspension of deportation or special
rule cancellation of removal (pursuant
to section 203 of Public Law 105–100), Form I–881; Guam Visa
Waiver Information, Form I-736; Collection Request (ICR) utilizing
emergency review procedures to the
the applicable component of the monthly report naturalization papers, Form N-4; Application for
Posthumous Citizenship, Form N–644.
The INS sought comments and requested the Office of Management and Budget emergency approval and a 60-day information collection period for Immigration Bond, Form I-352.
Xenophobes Use Climate Of Fear To Push Agendas
An editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle says "Immigration control has
now become indistinguishable from the fight against terrorism. New
immigrants will almost certainly face delays and confusion in getting their
visa applications approved. The more insidious danger is that xenophobic
forces trying to restrict immigration will exploit the new linkage to
promote their own short-sighted agendas."
