ICE detainee passes away at Krome

MIAMI — A 41-year-old Panamanian national, who was being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) pending removal from the United States, died Thursday at Krome Service Processing Center in Miami.

Jose Segundo was taken into ICE custody on Dec. 3 and was being detained at Krome. Early Thursday morning Segundo complained of chest pains. Krome's in-house emergency medical team immediately responded to Segundo's medical condition.

Segundo became unresponsive and CPR was administered. Emergency Medical Services personnel from the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue team arrived at the scene and continued CPR. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.

ICE has notified Segundo's next of kin, Panamanian consular officials and his attorney of record about his death.

Consistent with ICE protocol, the appropriate state health and local law enforcement agencies have also been informed.

Segundo is the third detainee to pass away in ICE custody in fiscal year 2011.
