ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Lory Rosenberg (Discussion Leader) is owner of IDEAS Consultation and Coaching (Immigration Defense Expert Advocacy Solutions), providing incisive case and issue consultation, expert opinion, and mentoring for attorneys, advocates and organizations engaged in agency and federal court appeals, asylum, convictions, admission, visas/adjustment of status, waivers, removal defense, naturalization, and immigration reform. Ms. Rosenberg offers private client representation, writing, and litigation support, and coaches attorneys and professionals to succeed in transforming challenges with money, limiting beliefs, stress, and life transitions. She co-authored the treatise, Immigration Law and Crimes, decided 20,000 administrative appeals between 1995 and 2002 as an appellate judge on the Board of Immigration Appeals, directed leading non-profit legal efforts, and taught immigration, asylum, and criminal removal law at AU Washington College of Law. She is a highly respected national lecturer, trainer, and author of numerous articles and manuals on immigration law.
Lisa Brodyaga is an immigration attorney practicing in Texas.
Jeff Joseph is senior partner of Joseph Law Firm, PC. He is a graduate of the University of Denver, College of Law. He is a past Chapter Chair of the Colorado Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and served as an elected director on the AILA National Board of Governors from 2003-2004 and 2006-2009. He has been qualified as an expert witness before the state and federal courts on employment-related and criminal-related immigration issues, and is a frequent local and national lecturer on various immigration topics. Mr. Joseph has been a speaker at the annual AILA conferences every year since 2001, and he has also addressed numerous other regional and state immigration conferences. Mr. Joseph has represented clients before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the U.S. District Courts, and the Circuit Courts of Appeals, and has published several opinions in those courts. He is an adjunct professor of immigration law at the University of Denver, College of Law. Mr. Joseph is bi-lingual in Spanish and English. Mr. Joseph heads up the employment-based immigration section and works primarily on employment based immigration cases, employer sanctions and federal litigation.
Dawn Lurie is a partner in the firm's Labor and Employment practice group and leader of the firm’s Business Immigration and Compliance practice, based in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. Ms. Lurie has over 20 years of experience advising on U.S. and global immigration and is ranked as a leading business immigration lawyer by Chambers, Legal 500, Best Lawyers, Who's Who Legal, and other publications. Ms. Lurie regularly speaks and writes about immigration compliance matters and is often quoted by major news agencies and publications, including the Washington Post and the Associated Press.
Michelle Mendez is a Senior Attorney at Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Washington Immigration Legal Services where she was previously the 2008-2010 DLA Piper Equal Justice Works Fellow. Michelle focuses her practice on deportation defense litigation, family-based petitions, domestic violence and crime victims' relief, civil rights advocacy, appellate work, and community education. Michelle also represents unaccompanied minors on Special Immigrant Juvenile Status petitions in Maryland Circuit Courts. She is a 2008 alumna of the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law where she received the William P. Cunningham Award for Exceptional Achievement & Service as well as the Annual Leadership in Public Interest Program Student Pro Bono Award. During law school, Michelle interned at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in Costa Rica and Ayuda, Inc. Prior to law school, Michelle worked at the Capital Area Immigrants' Rights Coalition, the French Ministry of Education in Rennes, France and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). In her spare time, Michelle serves on the AILA National and DC Chapter Unauthorized Practice of Law Committees and the Maryland Immigrant Rights Coalition Board of Directors, and teaches for Shemer Bar Review. Michelle is a native Spanish speaker originally from Medellín, Colombia, speaks French fluently.
Mehreen Shah or Mona Shah as she is more commonly known. Born in the UK, Mona graduated from the University of Northumbria in England in 1990. Mona was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales in 1993, and was admitted to the New York Bar and the United States Federal Bar in 1997. After moving to New York in 1995, she established her own law firm in New York City in 1997. The firm handles legal matters for clients worldwide. Her firm also has a London affiliate office which allows for the representation of European, Middle-Eastern and South Asian clients. Mona has over 17 years of legal experience, with more than 13 years concentrated in U.S. immigration and family law and litigation. Her firm, Mona Shah and Associates, represents individual, high profile and corporate clients from all over the world. Mona is highly proficient and experienced in EB-5 law and practice, and is the author of a forthcoming book for investors on the EB-5 laws and procedures. She has hands-on experience setting up and establishing EB-5 Regional Centers. Mona was also one of the 4 original founders of New York City Regional Center and the only Immigration Attorney on the team. Mona also founded the New York Immigration Fund, RC; her firm, Mona Shah & Associates, exclusively handled the Times Square Hotel project. Mona Shah & Associates handles the EB-5 Investor petitions for multiple regional centers. Mona has authored and published numerous articles including EB-5 related articles. She has written and spoken extensively on immigration law. She is often featured as a guest speaker at legal seminars and on local television news programs.
Isaac Wheeler is a litigation staff attorney at the Immigrant Defense Project, a legal resource center specializing in the intersection of criminal and immigration law. Before joining IDP, Isaac was an immigration staff attorney at The Bronx Defenders, where he advised immigrant defendants and their criminal defense counsel on the immigration consequences of criminal dispositions and represented immigrants convicted of criminal offenses in removal proceedings. Isaac is a 2003 graduate magna cum laude of NYU School of Law, where he was a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar, Sinsheimer Service Scholar, Florence Allen Scholar, and Editor-in-Chief of the NYU Review of Law & Social Change. Prior to joining The Bronx Defenders, he served as a law clerk to Judge Allyne R. Ross of the Eastern District of New York and to then-Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Isaac has taught as an adjunct professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and as an adjunct clinical professor at NYU School of Law.
