A Note from the Editors:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Monday, January 15 is a federal holiday in the US in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King was born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. King fought for the rights of African Americans in peaceful ways following the philosophy of Mohandas Gandhi's nonviolent social protest. He began his civil rights activities in 1955 when he protested the segregated bus system in Montgomery, Alabama after an African American woman, Rosa Parks, was arrested for failing to give up her seat to a white passenger. King's most famous civil rights activity was the march on Washington in 1963 where he gave his speech, "I Have a Dream," in front of the Lincoln Memorial. He is remembered as a civil rights leader who had a great impact on the desegregation of the US.
Martin Luther King was assassinated while standing on the balcony of a motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. Following his murder, riots broke out across the United States resulting in the deaths of forty-six people. Ironically, this violence was what King was fighting against. President Reagan signed legislation in 1983 designating the third Monday of January as an official US holiday for Martin Luther King's Birthday. King is the only American besides George Washington to have his birthday designated a national holiday.
