A Note from the Editors:

With only one no vote the Senate approved H.R. 3162, the "Uniting and Strengthening America Act by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act of 2001." The immigration provisions are found in Title IV. The bill now moves to the President's desk for signature.

The deadline for the DV-2003 Lottery is noon on Wednesday, October 31, 2001. Entries received after that date will be disqualified regardless of when they are postmarked. There is no specific format for the entry. Simply use a plain sheet of paper and type or clearly print in the Roman alphabet: 1) full name, with the last (surname/family) name underlined, 2) date and place of birth, 3) applicant's native country, if different from country of birth, 4) name, date and place of birth of the applicant's spouse and children, if any, 5) full mailing address, 6) an in-focus photograph of the applicant facing the camera and taken against a neutral, light-colored background, and 7) signature. The applicant must personally sign the entry, using his or her usual and customary signature. Neither an initialed signature nor block printing of the applicant's name will be accepted. Both people in the US and abroad can enter, but for those who are in the US illegally winning the lottery may not allow them to adjust status. If you hope to get a visa and have not yet sent your entry do not delay any longer. Good luck!

Letters to Editor

To write to Editor, send emails to weeklyeditor@ilw.com.

Dear Editor:

I hope that these words are not met with anger. I only wish to express my opinion. I value everyone's opinions as much as mine.

I believe that we are judging people who are in the same position our founding fathers were several hundred years ago. Let us not forget that the vast majority of US citizens are here because of immigration. We are a nation built on hope and freedom. The minute we begin to limit the hope and freedom of future Americans we also begin to destroy the foundation we were built on.

I know it is easy to say stop immigration now, especially since we are Americans. Our mind set allows us to believe that it was OK for us to come to America but it is no longer OK for others to do the same.

We must put our fears aside and realize the importance of our diversity. If we learn nothing else from the oppression we have put on may races such as the American Indian and the African American we must learn to accept others and their contributions. I ask anyone who reads this to think of the immigrants who now serve in our armed forces and protect the freedoms of your families. Could you look at these men and women and tell them that they are not wanted because they were not born in the right country? It seems to me that immigration is only a problem when it is not in our interest.

Who are we to tell someone they are not allowed to live on God's land!

Sincerely,
A Proud American
