ID Cards For Immigrants
According to a Associated Press report, for the first time, a U.S. city (Richmond, KY) is issuing its own immigrant identification. Immigration experts say they are not aware of any other city or municipality in the nation that issues its own immigrant IDs. According to Richmond City Manager David Evans, the cards will be used for identification purposes and was created to assist immigrants in completing tasks most citizens take for granted, such as cashing a check or properly identifying themselves to authorities. The ID cards will not change a person's immigration status, nor can it be used to help them obtain a drivers license.
Richmond, Kentucky's immigrant identification initiative will surely be a litmus test for other municipalities struggling to overcome the documentation problems for immigrants in their communities.
