Eligibility Requirements
Most customers are eligible to E-File, but a few are not. You cannot E-File if:
- You live outside the United States;
- You are applying for a waiver of the filing fee; or
- Your Permanent Resident Card was issued to you before you were 14 and you have reached your 14th birthday.
Also, some applicants, because of their status, may not be able to E-File their application. Review the form's E-Filing Instructions and Eligibility Requirements before proceeding.
Before Completing Your Application
To E-File, you will need:
- Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5
- Netscape 4.7 or higher, or Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
- A printer to print your application and Confirmation Receipt notice
- A checking or savings account from which to electronically transfer U.S. funds for fee
payment; OR a credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa):
OR a debit card bearing the logo of a credit card that we accept.
- Please read the form's E-Filing Instructions and Eligibility Information for the application you intend to complete before trying to E-File. Your E-Filing session may "timeout" after 15 minutes of inactivity. You cannot save an incomplete application. Please see E-Filing Tips for more information.
After Completing Your Application
- Save your application as a PDF file.
- Save your completed application and Confirmation Receipt notice on a floppy
disk or on your computer's hard drive.
- Schedule an appointment to have your fingerprints, signature, and photograph captured electronically (See Scheduling an Appointment for Fingerprinting and Photographs below)
- Review the E-Filing Instructions and Eligibility Requirements for
information on documents you may need to provide to support your application.
- Attach a copy of the Confirmation Receipt notice to the documents to
help USCIS match the supporting documents/evidence to your file.
- Do not mail photographs to USCIS for E-Filed applications.
Scheduling an Appointment for Fingerprinting and Photographs
- PLEASE NOTE: The USCIS cannot process your application until you have appeared for your scheduled appointment at an Application Support Center.
- Follow the instructions on your Confirmation Receipt
notice to schedule your appointment at one of USCIS' Application Support
Centers - small offices that have special cameras and equipment to
"capture" a digital photograph, signature and fingerprints.
- The Application Support Center will need to see your receipt number; take a copy of your Confirmation Receipt notice to your appointment at the Application Support Center.
- A few Application Support Centers are not able to collect digital information. Use the list below to help decide if E-Filing will be the best option for you.
