Who Can Vote?

This year's Presidential election has caused a fervor to get out the vote. Both parties are actively encouraging individuals to exercise their right to vote this Tuesday, November 2nd. Who is eligible to vote in the Presidential election? Only US citizens (naturalized or by birth) are eligible to vote in the Presidential elections. Lawful permanent residents (green card holders) are not eligible to vote in Presidential elections. As a permanent resident, you are only allowed to vote in those state and local elections that do not require you to be a US citizen. The N-400, Application for Naturalization, includes specific questions on illegal voting.

  • Have you EVER registered to vote in any Federal, state, or local election in the United States?
  • Have you EVER voted in any Federal, state, or local election in the United States?
It is very important to bear this in mind because voting in elections which are limited to US citizens can be a ground for deportation (removal).
