Dear Editor:
I recently received my H1B visa. I used the expedited service and the USCIS was absolutely wonderful in preparing all the information and returning a favorable decision within 8 days from filing. I was overjoyed. Until, I had the misfortune of visiting the Social Security Administration to obtain my SS Card. It is absolutely amazing to me the sorry customer service this administrative organization provides. I received my work authorization on November 17th, 2003 and filed for the SS Card the same day. Today is January 5, 2004 and I still have not received anything. They tell me it may take 2 months "if" they cannot verify it on line. This is the part I cannot understand. I was able to verify the positive approval of the visa on the USCIS website. I was told it would be issued within 2 days of verification "if" they could verify it on line, other words it make take 2 weeks to 2 months. This is absurd. There is no one to complain to. The people at the SS office act as if they don't give a damn. My prospective employer said they would not hire me until I had the SS Card. I have contact the S.S. office and they said I would just have to wait, they could not follow-up in anyway nor was their anything else I could do.
Just a word of caution. Even though you may pay for expedited services thought the USCIS, please be aware it does not matter one friggin bit as the S.S. office is going to take as long as they need or want and if you complain or try to find out anything about your application. Forget it. They will not. Just be prepared. If you know of anything else I can do, please let me know.
